BRASILIA, Oct 19 (Reuters) – Brazil has detected a case of Newcastle disease at a turkey farm in the southern state of Santa Catarina, Agriculture Minister Andre de Paula said on Monday, adding that sanitary measures had been put in place and would affect 133 farms in the region.
• Newcastle is a highly contagious and viral disease affecting birds, like avian flu
• Brazil is the world’s largest chicken meat exporter
• Brazilian officials said they were preparing detailed reports and would share all relevant information with the country’s main trading partners
• Brazil’s Acting Secretary for Agricultural Trade, Rafael Requiao, said it was too early to provide any concrete information on possible import suspensions
• China, one of Brazil’s main chicken export destinations, in 2024 imposed an embargo on chicken meat from Rio Grande do Sul after a case of Newcastle disease was confirmed at a commercial farm in the state
