EAST LANSING, MI — Two Michigan State University trustees are facing sanctions because they did not sign a recently adopted code of ethics and conduct.
The controversial new policy, which was voted on during a late-night meeting on Sunday, May 17, limits the capacity in which trustees can communicate with the public, including a list of punishments for those who don’t follow the new code, which stresses the importance of “loyalty” to MSU.
Trustees Mike Balow, R-Plymouth, and Rema Vassar, D-Detroit, refused to sign onto the new conduct rules as required by May 24. The two MSU trustees aren’t on Mackinac Island this week for the annual policy conference because the university revoked their credentials after the trustees refused to sign, according to a report in the Detroit News.
Balow and Vassar are also likely to have their credentials to attend MSU athletic events pulled. The access to MSU athletic events and travel associated with games is seen as one of the major perks of being on the board.
