EAST LANSING, MI — The fire that destroyed an apartment building on Saturday night at Chandler’s Crossing in East Lansing left nearly 50 people, many college students, homeless.
Fire officials said the fire started on an exterior balcony from “carelessly discarded smoking materials.” Most apartment dwellers had little or no insurance coverage.
The Red Cross says it was immediately on the scene providing displaced residents with blankets, food, water and comfort kits. They are also helping people replace critical items like prescription medication and eyeglasses. Relocation services are also available.
Residents affected by the fire can contact the Red Cross for assistance by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. Donations are also being accepted.
