FARMINGTON HILLS, MI — Former Michigan State football and Detroit Tigers star Kirk was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2015, but the diagnosis hasn’t slowed him that much. Now he has even more to look forward to since the Kirk Gibson Foundation has cut the ribbon Monday on the Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson’s Wellness, a first-of-its-kind facility in Farmington Hills for those impacted by Parkinson’s.
Gibson was a two-sport athlete MSU before a 17-year MLB career, highlighted by his years with the Tigers and winning a World Series with the Dodgers. Gibson also managed the Arizona Diamondbacks for five seasons before retiring and joining the broadcast booth for the Tigers.
The Kirk Gibson Foundation works to improve the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s and the standalone wellness center is a 32,000-square-foot facility that spans two floors and offers programs that focus on cognitive and movement therapy for patients. All services are free of charge at the clinic, according to a press release.
