LANSING, MI — It was a very late night for state lawmakers in Lansing. The governor was forced to sign a continuation budget to keep the state functioning after legislators failed to come to terms on a new fiscal year 2026 budget by the deadline at midnight last night.
The Michigan state government will stay open,” Whitmer said Wednesday in a statement.
However, the continuation budget is for only one week. Lawmakers will continue meeting to finalize the budget. A press release from Whitmer, House Speaker Matt Hall and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks said the Legislature intended to pass a full budget later this week.
