HOLT, MI — The Delhi Township Fire Department is working with the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office to investigate three suspicious fires at two Holt Public Schools buildings between Friday and Saturday, according to a Delhi Township press release on Monday afternoon.
Authorities responded to a report of a dumpster fire just after 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Washington Woods Middle School, 2055 Washington Road, said Brian Ball, chief of the Delhi Township Fire Department. Firefighters responded to a reported fire on the roof of Horizon Elementary School, 5776 W. Holt Road, just before 7:00 a.m. on Saturday. The fire at Horizon took two hours to get under control and extinguished, Ball said in a press release.
“The Horizon fire appeared suspicious, and we worked with Michigan State Police to have their specially trained dog come out to determine whether accelerators were used to start the fire,” Ball said. “The dog got a hit and we are treating both fires, at Horizon and Washington Woods, as arson.”
When firefighters returned to Washington Woods following the fire at Horizon, they determined an additional fire had been set there after the dumpster fire had been extinguished, Ball said. The second fire went out on its own.
Both Washington Woods Middle School and Horizon Elementary School also were vandalized with graffiti over the weekend, according to a press release.
Authorities are asking for anyone with information about these incidents to reach out to either Chief Brian Ball at the Delhi Fire Department at (517) 268-3043 or Ingham County Detective Sgt. Brad Delaneyat the Ingham County Sheriff’s office at (517) 676-8251.
