LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is asking President Biden for a Major Disaster Declaration for Branch, Cass, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph counties due to the May 7 tornadoes.
The declaration would activate federal individual assistance programs for the counties after an assessment of the damage done from four tornadoes.
The storms that day injured 16 people and caused significant damage to homes, businesses, and the power grid.
Whitmer declared a state of emergency the night of the storms and state, federal, and local officials started doing preliminary damage assessments on May 15. That assessment estimates over $4 million in assistance is needed.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will review Whitmer’s request and make a recommendation to President Biden.
