Location: Two locations in Portage (brewery and restaurant)
and Oshtemo (7842 Portage Road, Portage, MI 49024 & 6101 West Main St.,
Kalamazoo, MI 49009)


Price: Food = A little pricier. Meals can range from $12 to
over $20 for some of their bigger entrees.

Taste: The pizza was incredible, my burger was unique and
delicious, the chip dip trio was a great starter, and I washed it all down with
one of my favorite ciders I’ve ever tried.

Vegetarian Options: Very vegetarian and vegan friendly. They
put little symbols next to every item on the menu to show if it can be made
vegetarian, vegan, or even gluten free.

Description:


Latitude 42 was a place I always heard good things about,
always wanted to go, and finally got to try it. I went to the Oshtemo location
which is relatively new and kind of secluded from all the other chain and busy
businesses up and down West Main. It’s a cute building with some awesome patio
seating that I’ll definitely have to experience in the summer.


To begin, Latitude is a very giving restaurant. They have
their “pay if forward cheesecake” where $1 of each piece sold goes to a local
charity they chose for this month. They also had a beer (a pale wheat ale called
“Double Deeezz”) where a portion of the sale went to breast cancer research. It’s
just nice to see a local restaurant helping their community in any way possible.


We feasted at this restaurant. Our server was super helpful
and recommended the Bavarian soft pretzels for an appetizer, which sound
delicious, but we went for the chip and dip trio which was actually a massive
portion of chips with grilled corn and black bean salsa, pico de gallo, and four-cheese
queso. For my vegetarian friends, I tried the queso burger (sautéed onions and
bell peppers, four-cheese queso, and tortilla strips) and just substituted for
the vegan black bean patty. It was very tasty but the cheese was extremely
messy. I ended up just eating it with a fork and knife because picking up the
burger was a disaster. My friend got the white truffle mushroom pizza (gouda
cream sauce, white cheddar, white truffle oil, truffle salt, mushrooms, smoked
gouda, parsley, and mozzarella) and although my burger was good I had some
regrets that I didn’t get that because the bite I did have was absolutely
amazing. Overall the food was delicious, nicely portioned, and a little on the
pricier side, but it was worth it for what you were getting.


To my cider-drinking fans, if you like sweeter, fruitier
ciders, their L42 is the way to go. It was honestly my favorite cider I’ve ever
tried because it pretty much just tasted like juice (which can be dangerous
when it is most certainly not just juice).


Latitude 42 really strives to be family-friendly, which can
be a good thing or a bad thing. When we went it was full of young people,
couples without kids, and full families, so you’ll really see a mix of
everyone. The only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was that they have this little
kids play section in the corner of the restaurant and it actually makes it very
noisy with kids running around screaming. Almost sounded like a McDonald’s play
place, but I guess if you’re striving to be family friendly that’s a huge plus
to parents just looking for a drink and a good meal.


Overall this restaurant really strives to be part of the community
with their charity work, locally sourced ingredients, and overall Michigan-loving
design. The food was delicious, the drinks were even better, and I will
definitely be back to enjoy some great service and an overall fun
family-centered atmosphere.
